Understanding Colorado Trial Courts

County Courts

County courts generally handle civil cases involving less than $25,000, misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, protection orders, and initial felony complaints that may later move to district court.

District Courts

District courts hear civil cases of any amount, as well as domestic relations, criminal, juvenile, probate, and mental-health matters.

Water Courts

Colorado’s water courts have authority over water-rights cases, including the use, administration, and determination of water rights. Colorado has seven water courts, serving the state’s major river basins.

Appeals

Most appeals from district-court decisions are heard by the Colorado Court of Appeals. The Colorado Supreme Court is the highest court in the state and reviews select appeals from the Court of Appeals and, in limited circumstances, lower courts.
