His over-arching emphasis is on the importance of communication and understanding in the management and resolution of conflict. Prior to 1992, Travers’ had a brief introduction to mediation during his graduate studies in Counseling Psychology, and a subsequent period of informal application during his milieu therapy duties in clinical practice. He had similar brief introductions in the first couple years of law school, followed by a much deeper dive into mediation training and mediated clinic and court cases in his final year of law school. He has integrated mediation in legal proceedings ever since. After a half dozen years combining mediation and municipal law and general private practice, Travers began to limit his practice primarily to Alternative Dispute Resolution beginning in 1998. He has now mediated thousands of cases, including civil, family, probate, and criminal proceedings.
Travers has also served as a mediation coach, trainer, and mentor since the mid-90s. He was an adjunct professor for the DU Law School Mediation Clinic in 1996. He has coached and mentored mediators of the Victim - Offender Reconciliation Program of Boulder County and the Colorado Center for Mediation, Inc.
He is a charter member of both The Rocky Mountain Collaborative Law Professionals and The Collaborative Divorce Professionals of Boulder County. These are interdisciplinary practice groups working on the development of legal representation and facilitation to help conflicting parties work together to resolve their disputes out of court.
