The current sociopolitical climate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights has seen an uptick in hate crimes against members of this community and an historic volume of regressive legislation targeting this community nationwide. Because Colorado is viewed as a safer place to live openly as a member of the LGBTQ+ community than many other states, attorneys have a duty to understand considerations unique to this community and incorporate allyship into their representation at a personal and firm-wide level.

This course will provide foundational information on the spectrum of LGBTQ+ identities, provide information on how to incorporate inclusive language into everyday communications, address what barriers members of the LGBTQ+ community face in different areas of the law, highlight areas of emerging legal concern, and provide holistic recommendations for effectively incorporating this allyship into your advocacy.

Information specific to Colorado legal issues includes: the process of updating gender markers on government documents; emerging concerns in parental relocation matters when one parent wishes to relocate with a minor child to a state with regressive LGBTQ+ legislation; the placement of criminal defendants of trans- and gender-nonconforming identity when incarcerated.
