Presented by Andy Horn of Westwater Hydrology LLC will provide background information on PFAS and discuss recent regulatory developments.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of an estimated 15,000 man-made fluorinated organic chemicals manufactured since the 1940s and present in many consumer products including food packaging, textiles and carpeting, personal care products and Class B fire-fighting foams (AFFF). An estimated 16 million Americans have been exposed to some concentration of PFAS compounds in their drinking water and 99% of adult Americans’ have detectable PFAS in our blood. Consumed at part-per-trillion concentrations, PFAS accumulate in the body for years and have been linked to multiple health effects including cancer, immune system suppression, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and pre-eclampsia. Referred to as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are persistent in the environment, highly mobile in groundwater, difficult to destroy, and complex to sample.

Regulation of PFAS in drinking water and in the environment lagged at the federal level and the states have established a patchwork of regulatory and health-advisory limits. The US EPA has recently designated two compounds as hazardous substances, established MCLs for six compounds and is rescinding the MCLs for four, and also rescinded Biden era ELGs to restrict releases to the environment. CDPHE has released a Narrative Policy for multiple PFAS compounds in 2020.
