    By now, most real estate lawyers have an awareness that cybercrime happens and that specifically wire fraud is on the rise in real estate transactions. However, general awareness of wire fraud doesn’t actually help people detect that they could potentially be scammed in a particular situation. Avoid becoming a victim, help your clients avoid becoming a victim and help the reduce the exposure and risk when your clients become victims. Presented by Jon Goodman.

    What Every Lawyer Should Know About Public Benefits – Guidance for attorneys when dealing with public benefits issues that they encounter in other areas of practice.

    Summary-

    Public benefits issues can arise in all areas of law.  As an elder law attorney, you may need to understand how your client’s estate plan will affect eligibility for long-term care Medicaid.  As a family law attorney, you may need to understand how a divorce will affect your client’s (or your client’s ex-spouse’s) eligibility for public benefits.  As an immigration attorney, you may need to understand how your client’s status affects eligibility for various public benefits.  These are just a few examples of how public benefits issues come up in the everyday practice of law.

    The Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct require attorneys to represent clients competently (C.R.P.C. 1.1).  An understanding of public benefits law will help you to advise and represent clients competently when public benefits issues arise.

    The attorneys on the panel will discuss the basics of:

    • 1.       Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI);
    • 2.       Colorado’s public benefits programs, including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Food Assistance (Food Stamps), Old Age Pension (OAP), and Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND); and
    • 3.       Health care benefits, including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

    Format-

    • I.                    Introduction – Erin B. Eastvedt - 10 minutes
